What a challenge!!! In Italian and French there is too much similarity between them and some to English, which probably should help a lot or confuse a lot. I am not a specialist perhaps but I like this web dictionary a lot - http://www.zhongwen.com/, plus also - http://wakan.manga.cz - it shows the sequence of lines for most of them and simply the best interactive dictionary your hamble servant knows.
I think that learning Chinese or Japanese characters is a big enough intellectual game by itself, I am not talking about speaking which is completely different story.
